Water Quality Update for Little River

water quality update

Last Friday we shared a Special Water Quality Warning for the Little River. Elevated levels of human bacteria were detected in the waters of Little River (located at the East end of Goose Rocks Beach) from water samples taken on 7/5 (results received 7/10) and 7/12 (results received 7/14). The original announcement can be found here.

Additional samples were collected Friday 7/14 at this site (GR1 - Little River) as well as the Main Beach (GR2), below the bridge by Beaver Pond (BP 1), and upstream in the Little River (LR 1). The results have come back and we are glad to say that all sites tested found no human bacteria (DNA). The results can be seen below:

Collection date: 7/14/2023

Results received: 7/18/2023

Site: GR#2 Main Beach – “none detected”
Site: GR#1 Little River – “none detected”
Site: BP#1 Beaver Pond (below bridge) “none detected”
Site LR#1 Little River (upstream) “none detected”

While we are glad to see these negative results, we are continuing to investigate and are performing additional testing as needed to locate any issues.

As a reminder, due to the frequent presence of “flag” bacteria (enterococci – which is not specific to humans, but may indicate the presence of human), the mouths of both Little River and the Batson River are permanently posted by the Town as areas where water contact should be avoided, especially for children and any immunocompromised individuals.
