Do I need to register my dog?
Maine State law requires that any dog six (6) months of age or older that spends more than 10 days within the State must be licensed. Dog owners must obtain the annual license from the Town Clerk's office in the town where the dog is kept by December 31st of each year.
What are the fees?
The fee to license a dog is $11.00 if the dog is capable of producing young, or $6.00 if the dog has been spayed or neutered.
PLEASE NOTE: Dogs licensed after January 31st of any year are charged the annual fee PLUS an additional $25.00 late fee. The late fee is mandated by State Law and may not be waived for any reason.
How do I register my dog?
1. You may come into the Town Clerk's office to process the registration; or
2. Mail a current rabies certificate and check for the appropriate fee to: P.O. Box 566, Kennebunkport, ME 04046; or
3. Register your dog online at https://www1.maine.gov/cgi-bin/online/dog_license/index.pl
When licensing your dog, current rabies information must be presented if not already on file in the Town Clerk's Office. Please provide new rabies information if your dog has been immunized since the last time you registered him/her. If your dog has been spayed or neutered, please provide the Clerk with a veterinarian's certificate of surgery.
Are their any other laws regarding dogs that I should know about?
Yes, there are.
The annual municipal tag and the rabies tag obtained from your veterinarian must be securely attached to the dog's collar at all times.
There is a State leash law and several local municipal dog ordinances. You can find the local ordinances in the Town Ordinances section of this website.
