Health Officer

Maine statue mandates that every city, town or township appoint a local Health Officer whose function is to ensure the health and safety of the residents. This includes a wide range of concerns including but not exclusive: dangerous buildings, faulty septic systems, safe drinking water, animal /insect borne diseases, communicable diseases, lodging and food safety. The Health Officer is charged with enforcing federal and state laws,policy and safe practices. Since 911, the role of a Maine Health Officer has expanded to include responsibility for community preparedness and response in the event of a disaster.
