How do I register to vote?

To register to vote in Kennebunkport, please come to the Town Clerk's office during regular business hours to fill out a voter registration application. Title 21-A Sec. 122 & 152 requires that you show a State of Maine-issued photo ID or Social Security Card and proof of residency in Kennebunkport. You may also register to vote at the polls on election day with the documents referenced above.  The deadline for receipt of voter registration applications submitted by mail or by a 3rd person is the close of business on the 21st day before election day. The deadline for in-person registration is the close of the polls on election day (Title 21-A Sec.121).

Please note that it may save you from waiting in long lines on election day if you register at Town Hall beforehand.

Where/when do I vote?

All Kennebunkport residents vote at the Village Fire Station, 32 North Street. The polls are open at 8:00 AM and close at 8:00 PM. If you choose to vote absentee, you may pick up your ballots at Town Hall up to 30 days before any election. The last day to pick up absentee ballots is always close of business on the 5th day before the election (per State law).

Absentee Voting

Absentee ballots are available approximately 30 days before each election (Title 21-A Sec. 753). There are three ways to request ballots:

  • Stop by the Town Clerk's Office during regular business hours to pick up your ballots; Click here for the absentee ballot application
  • Call the Town Clerk (967-1610) to request that ballots be mailed to you; or
  • Use the following link to electronically request that ballots be mailed to you (only if there is a State of Maine election)
  • Click here for frequently asked questions regarding absentee voting.

Per State Statute (Tile 21-A Sec. 753-B.2), the last day to request absentee ballots is 5 days before any election. Absentee ballots must be received by 8 PM on election day in order to be counted (Title 21-A Sec. 755). Please plan accordingly!

Town Meeting Information

Town meeting is the basic legislative assembly of local government used in Maine and throughout New England. At the heart of this type of government is the ideal of direct participation in local government. Kennebunkport uses a bifurcated (two-part) meeting style for the annual town meeting in June. There is a secret ballot election, often coupled with State elections, on the 2nd Tuesday of June. This ballot contains races for open town offices as well as ordinance revision questions. The Saturday that follows is an open town meeting to consider all other business. A Special Town Meeting may be held in November to coincide with State and Federal elections. Ballot questions for Special Town Meetings are usually referendum questions.

How do I run for Select Board or School Board?

Select Board and School Board members are elected in June as part of the Annual Town Meeting secret ballot vote on the second Tuesday. In order to appear as a candidate on the ballot, an individual must circulate nomination papers and collect at least 25 signatures from Kennebunkport registered voters. Nomination papers are available 100 days before the election. They must be returned to the Town Clerk's Office with the minimum number of signatures at least 60 days before the election. The process and dates are set by State Statute 30-A MRSA, Section 2528(4). For more information, please contact the Clerk's Office at 967-1610.
