OSA Grant |
Rachel shared status of OSA Grant. There has been a lag in programming due to the previous Prevention Specialist resigning in November. Rachel has met with Sarah Ibbotson, the new Prevention Specialist and discussed grant activities. Rachel then gave on overview of the Coastal Healthy Communities Coalition, the Kennebunks’ Healthy Maine Partnership, and the new large grant that will be coming from OSA soon. The purpose of this grant is to develop a state-wide public health infrastructure with a focus on substance abuse prevention and chronic disease prevention. |

Update on Youth Services Coordinator’s Activities |
Rachel updated the Commission regarding her activities and upcoming professional commitments. She reported that her work load has become extremely heavy and demanding. She reported that she feels her position is maxed out and the department can’t continue to grow without additional resources. Rachel also gave history of Youth Services position and role of Youth Services Commission for the new members. Betsy Fitzgerald is actually a returning member; she sat on the Commission prior to Rachel’s tenure. Susan Snyder spent much of her career in Middle School Education and is new to the community and wants to get involved. Karen is currently
a School Board member and will be a great liaison. |

Discussion re: school and environment |
There followed a discussion on the KHS environment; MYDAUS (ME Youth Drug and Alcohol Use Survey) data; substance use and sexual activity amongst the youth; how to address needs of kids in crisis and the role of prevention—the need to do more on front end to prevent and provide resources to kids and families. Karen discussed the District Task Force on Substance Abuse Prevention Planning. |

Review of Monthly Report |
Rachel discussed the planning and implementing of upcoming “Cop on the Spot” Youth Forum hosted by the Kennebunk Police Department that she will facilitate. She also discussed the planning of the first annual Turn Beauty Inside Out “Celebration of True Beauty” Festival, as part of Kennebunk’s May Day Festival, celebrating our new definition of beauty as “Good Hearts, Great Works, and Activism.” |

Meeting times and frequency |
The YSC is currently only meeting quarterly—September/December/March/June. It was agreed that the meetings should therefore be lengthened to 1 and ½ hour, thus meeting from timeHour16Minute304:30 – 6:00. This was approved by those in attendance. |
