Discussion re: OSA Grant implementation |
Ruth asked who Andy Grief is. Rachel described the position of Prevention Specialist at MSAD #71 that has been funded through the OSA Substance Abuse Prevention Services Grant. Rachel discussed the steps that have been taken to implement the grant. Andy is working 15 hours/week at KHS to initiate the NOT on Tobacco program, and the New Chance program, an alternative to suspension program that focuses on decision-making and cognitive skill building. There was then a discussion about the community components of the grant and the best way to engage the community in the work. Ruth suggested using United Way and other already existing community groups.
Rachel responded that the proposal calls for our local Communities for Children and Youth to be the primary vehicle for the implementation of the community components of the grant. |

Discussion re: scheduling priorities of Youth Services Coordinator |
There was a discussion of scheduling issues of the Youth Services Coordinator. Ruth expressed concern that there always be enough time to provide necessary direct services to youth and families. Rachel discussed that time to see families is usually limited to after school and that naturally limits the amount of time available. Rachel stated that she already works longer hours and later days than she is paid for because she often has to see families after 4:30. There was further discussion about the balance between direct intervention and counseling time and prevention and community building work. Ruth stated that she believes the priority
should always be the clinical work and less community work. Stephanie stated that she believes the school work Rachel does is really important. It was agreed that this conversation will be continued and these issues will be reviewed periodically. |
