Job Description
Job Title: Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator
Department: Sewer Department
Reports To: Chief Operator
Illustrative Examples of Work:
- To be able to perform all the laboratory tests that are required to monitor the operation of the treatment plant pump stations, and collection system.
- To be available 24 hours a day and have the ability to evaluate and correct any emergency that may occur at the treatment plant, pump stations or on the collection system.
- To be able to perform the scheduled and routine maintenance of the treatment plant equipment, buildings and grounds.
- To be able to perform the scheduled and routine maintenance for the collection system. This will require the ability to go down into manholes that may be in excess of twenty (20) feet deep and pump stations that are greater than thirty (30) feet deep.
- To do the recordkeeping that is required for the operation and maintenance of the treatment plant and collection system.
- Operation of all mobile equipment. This will include, but not limited to, the following: pickup trucks, a one-ton service truck, a front-end loader, and various other pieces of equipment.
- Assistance in emergency response to this department and other departments of the town.
- Troubleshoots and repairs any problem that occurs at any of the pump stations and the grinder pump stations.
- Repairs sewer main breaks, and do manhole re_construction.
- To be able to use the emergency generators, pumps and sewer jetting equipment.
- Performs routine maintenance, painting, cleaning and landscaping at the pump stations and treatment plant.
- Perform any and all the other work that may be assigned by the Chief Operator and or the Superintendent.
Requirement of Work:
- Must have a good work record and be able to interpret and carry out written and oral orders.
- Must have the ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees.
- Must be able to work independently without detailed instruction or supervision.
- Requires good reading, math, writing, scientific, and verbal skills; and the ability to read blueprints, specifications, and vendor instructions.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 6 months to one year experience in wastewater.
Desirable Experience and Training:
- A Maine Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator License.
- A Collection Systems Operator’s Certificate.
- Laboratory experience.
- Experience or training in the operation, control and maintenance of wastewater treatment plants and collection systems.
Specific Mechanical Skills:
- The ability to interpret and understand blueprints and technical manuals.
- Experience in the operation of heavy equipment.
Necessary Special Requirements:
- Possession of a valid Maine motor vehicles operator license (driver's license). Your driver’s license will be checked. There can not be any restrictions or points on your driver’s license that would affect the Town's ability to insure you to drive any of the Town’s motor vehicles. If there are any problems at all, you will not be hired or if it is found after the fact, your employment with the Town will be terminated immediately.
- A background check is required for this position and will be conducted.
- If you posses a treatment plant operator’s certificate, it will be verified with Maine State DEP or whatever state it is issued from.
- A medical examination is required before start of employment.
- This position requires that you be placed on-call. When you are on-call, you will be expected to answer all the alarms that come in at night and on the weekends.
- When you are on-call, you will be required to work on the weekends.
- This position requires that you will be able to respond to work within (30) thirty minutes from notification to do so.
- Ability to work on ladders, catwalks, and supports at heights of 50 feet above the ground and at various depths below the ground.
- Requires working in outside and inside environments with noise and all temperatures and climatic conditions, and must be able to work under adverse weather conditions for extended periods of time.
- Must have the ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees.
- Requires using chemicals and cleaning solvents to maintain and repair equipment.
- Perform cleanup and housekeeping tasks for work area, tools, and equipment.
- Requires a working knowledge of the standard practices, common tools, materials, occupational hazards, and safety precautions.
- Requires basic knowledge relating to the maintenance of pumps, blowers, compressors, and other electrically driven equipment.
- Must have the ability to safely operate material handling equipment; and to safely use trade tools and equipment to inspect, maintain, or install equipment.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Required:
- Maine State Wastewater License.
- Understands the current regulations, state and federal, for confined space entry, first aid, documentation and procedures.
- Ability to perform daily tasks without direct supervision.
- Wastewater experience.
- A Collection Systems Operator’s Certificate.
- Laboratory practices and procedures.
- Plumbing, masonry, painting experience.
- Must have a valid driver's license and with a clean and safe driving record.
- Must demonstrate a working ability to use computer programs for maintenance management.
- Requires the ability to carry out verbal and written instructions.
- First Aid and CPR cards.
Working Conditions/Physical Demands:
- This position can be very physical at times and you will need to be in good condition.
- Ability to work in various positions which require bending (60%), walking (25%), standing (10%), and sitting (5%).
- Requires lying on back, kneeling, crawling, twisting, and squatting.
- Body movements require working with hands extended above and below head and from body up to 40 minutes, using hand tools weighing up to 15 pounds.
- Must be able to lift and carry 75 pounds in standing and bending positions, and carry while walking distances of 10 feet.
