Job Description




Job Title:  Lead Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator
Department:  Sewer Department
Reports To:  Chief Operator

General Summary:

Oversees and assists in the operations and maintenance of the treatment plant, pump stations and collection system.  To be available 24 hours a day for response to emergencies at the treatment plant, pump stations and collection systems.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Assist the Maintenance Mechanic in troubleshooting electrical, mechanical, plumbing problems.
  • Assist in the laboratory with sampling and testing practices and with any problems that may arise.
  • Performs duties of Chief Operator and Maintenance Mechanic when he is not available.
  • Assist the Chief Operator with purchasing of equipment upgrades.
  • Helps maintain the alarm radio systems.
  • Responsible for the cleanliness of the treatment plant and pump stations.
  • Responsible for the safety procedures for the department’s personnel.
  • Operate vehicles and mobile equipment for plant maintenance purposes.
  • Reports and documents the results of inspections and work performed; and trains peers and subordinates as requested.
  • Assures work is performed in a safe and professional manner by following established safety, operating, and emergency response procedures.
  • Requires working knowledge of the standard practices, common tools, materials, occupational hazards, and safety precautions.
  • Requires basic knowledge relating to the maintenance of pumps, blowers, compressors, and other electrically driven equipment.
  • Must have the ability to safely operate material handling equipment; and to safely use trade tools and equipment to inspect, maintain, or install equipment.
  • Requires good reading, math, writing, scientific, and verbal skills; and the ability to read blueprints, specifications, and vendor instructions.
  • Requires the ability to carry out verbal and written instructions.
  • Requires the ability to plan, organize, train, and functionally supervise subordinates.
  • Must have the ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Required:

  • Process control of Activated Sludge Process, Sludge Dewatering and Composting.
  • Strong mechanical, electrical and plumbing experience.
  • Supervisory skills.
  • Proficient in the use of computers.
  • Work flexible hours and be on call.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills for all aspects of treatment process.
  • Safety procedures for treatment plants and collections systems.
  • First Aid and CPR cards.
Education and Experience:

  • 1-year college certificate or equivalent.
  • 3-years experience.
  • State of Maine Grade 3 Wastewater Plant Operator's License; or the ability to acquire a Grade 3 license within one year from date of hire.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license with a clean and safe driving record.
Working Conditions/Physical Demands:

  • Outdoors and maintenance/garage working conditions. Moderate to heavy lifting.
  • Ability to work in various positions which require bending (60%), walking (25%), standing (10%), and sitting (5%).
  • Requires lying on back, kneeling, crawling, twisting, and squatting.
  • Body movements require working with hands extended above and below head and from body up to 40 minutes, using hand tools weighing up to 15 pounds.
  • Must be able to lift and carry 75 pounds in standing and bending positions, and carry while walking distances of 10 feet.
  • Ability to work on ladders, catwalks, and supports at heights of 50 feet above the ground and at various depths below the ground.
  • Requires working in outside and inside environments with noise and all temperatures and climatic conditions, and must be able to work under adverse weather conditions for extended periods of time.
  • Requires using chemicals and cleaning solvents to maintain and repair equipment.
