Conservation Commission
Minutes of February 2, 2004
Attendance: Dennis Rogers, Ruth Fisk, Alice Finnegan, Linda Wade, Janet Weston, and Jan Collins
1. We reviewed the year’s projects for the annual report.
Topics included- monitoring the public way signs
- participation in critical edge revision discussions
-providing brochures educating visitors about the sensitive wildlife at Goose Rocks Beach
- educational brochures about alternatives to pesticides and herbicides
- research and participation in discussions concerning pump-out stations on the Kennebunk River
- vernal pool preservation was also discussed
2. Discussed placing a notice in the K’port column of the Coast Star notifying owners of fields about a government program which grants stipends to landowners who delay haying until August to allow meadow nesting birds to have time to fledge their young. Also, ask Tom Bradbury to suggest names of people who should be contacted directly.
3. Linda suggested the town could pass an ordinance in which marinas would not be licensed unless they provided pump out services for visiting boats.
4. Discussion of computer recycling programs - suggestion of posting information regarding recycling on the town web site.
5. Review of the ad hoc committee on the Critical Edge - discussion of apparent change in the direction of the committee so that protection has been rolled back to shoreland zone instead of critical edge standards. Jan, Janet, and Linda will form a sub-committee to make recommendations to meet on Feb 4, 2004 at 7pm at the library. We will all meet on February 11, 2004, at the library at 7 pm to discuss and make final recommendations to the selectmen.
Linda will e-mail a copy of the ad-hoc critical edge committee’s final proposal to all CC members.
Meeting adjourned 9 pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Jan M. Collins
